(CNN) -- Sebastian Vettel will defend a 13-point lead over title rival Fernando Alonso in the final Formula One race of the season after finishing second behind Lewis Hamiton at the United States Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver was overtaken by McLaren's Hamilton on lap 42 in Austin, Texas, having led from the start.
Alonso secured third place to keep his hopes of a third world championship alive with the pair set to battle it out in Sao Paulo next week. Vettel is on 273 points, Alonso on 260.
Hamilton remains fourth in the standings but has closed the gap to third-placed Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen to 16 points.
Though Mark Webber retired with mechanical failure, Vettel's third place was enough to seal a third successive constructors' championship for Red Bull.
